Hello and welcome

If you are looking for help in the final stages of your academic, business or science fiction project, you have come to the right place.

Most writers tweak their work so much that they know there are issues in there that they can no longer even see. This is where I can help you. I can take that all that writing off your hands for a while and help you cleanse it of errors, ensuring that your final product is finished to the highest standard possible.

I am a freelance proofreader for writers, students, academics and businesses. If this is you, read on to find out more about how I can help you.

What are you working on? Let's see if we can get it finished together …

What is proofreading?

A proofreader provides the final, independent quality check on a piece of work before it is deemed finished and ready for publication. It’s a far more detailed process than simply checking for spelling; it is a comprehensive review of the text, grammar, referencing and layout of the work, and gives the author confidence that their work and reputation are presented as well as possible.

Proofreading is often confused with copyediting. Copyediting is a different practice, where the language, style and content of the text is edited. I do not currently offer this service to clients.

Visit the Proofreading Services page to find out more about what I do.

What kind of proofreading do I do?

I specialise in governance and business documentation, history, ancient history and archaeology, and science fiction.

The kinds of things I will work on include:

  • Business documents (marketing materials, bids, reports, proposals, presentations)

  • Training materials

  • Academic reports (theses or dissertations)

  • Novels and short stories

  • Newsletters

  • CVs

If you’re working on something that you don’t see in this list, don’t worry; contact me anyway.

I generally proofread UK English digitally, using MS Word (using tracked changes) or Adobe Acrobat (using comments). However, I am also happy to proofread digitally or on paper using British Standards Institution (BSI) proof-correction symbols.

If you would need me to use another format, just let me know; it’s unlikely to be a problem.

How much do I charge for proofreading?

There is no one-size-fits-all structure for fees for proofreading services; they’re entirely dependent on the nature of the text and the circumstances involved.
